The Historical Roots of Morris Cathedral Church of God in Christ
A Legacy of Faith and Community Since 1942 Founded in the heart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Morris Cathedral Church of God in Christ has a rich and inspiring history that dates back to 1942. Our church was established by the visionary Bishop Morris, a man of deep faith and passion for community service. With a profound commitment to spreading the love of Christ, Bishop Morris laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of spiritual life in Milwaukee.
Building a Dream: The First Black Church in Milwaukee
In 1949, after several years of dedicated ministry and unwavering faith, Bishop Morris successfully acquired the land needed to construct a permanent home for the congregation. This monumental achievement led to the establishment of **Morris Temple**, proudly distinguished as the first black church built in the city of Milwaukee. This historic milestone not only provided a place of worship but also became a symbol of hope and progress in the community.
A Foundation of Tradition and Modernity
Morris Cathedral Church of God in Christ has always been dedicated to nurturing a strong, vibrant community while upholding deep-rooted traditional values. Over the decades, we have evolved with the times, continually enhancing our ministries and outreach efforts to better serve the diverse needs of our congregation and the wider community.
A Continual Journey of Faith
From its humble beginnings in 1942 to the present day, Morris Cathedral has remained steadfast in its mission: to be a place for Change, Hope, and Healing. The legacy of Bishop Morris continues to inspire us as we move forward, fostering an inclusive, loving, and spiritually enriching environment for all who walk through our doors. In April 2006, Elder Micaiah J. Young Sr. was appointed as the pastor of Morris Memorial Church of God in Christ. Under his leadership, the church experienced a period of transformation and growth. In a step to honor our roots while embracing a forward-looking mission, the church adopted a new name: Morris Cathedral Life Center Church of God in Christ. This renaming paid homage to Bishop Walter Lewis Morris and underscored our commitment to life-changing ministry and outreach.
Transition and Growth
After nearly a decade of dedicated service, Elder Young resigned in his role as pastor. In June 2015, our Jurisdictional leader, Bishop Sedgwick Daniels, who also serves as the Senior Pastor of Holy Redeemer, was appointed to lead our congregation. Under Bishop Daniels' guidance and after much prayerful consideration, the church's name was changed to "Morris Cathedral Church of God in Christ." This change symbolized the start of a vibrant, faith-filled new chapter for our church community.
Present Leadership
In June 2018, Morris Cathedral welcomed Elder L. Michael Blevins as its new pastor. Dr. Blevins, with his profound spiritual care and educational leadership, continues to shepherd our congregation into a future grounded in faith, inclusivity, and community service. His vision continues to uphold the values instilled by our founder while nurturing a dynamic and engaged church family.

Standing on a Solid Foundation
The late Bishop Sedgwick Daniels left an indelible impact on Morris Cathedral Church of God in Christ and its current pastor, Dr. L. Michael Blevins. His leadership was marked by a deep commitment to spiritual growth, community outreach, and faith-based initiatives. Bishop Daniels' visionary approach reshaped the church, fostering an environment of inclusivity and dynamic worship. This profound legacy of faith and dedication continues to inspire and guide Dr. Blevins as he leads the congregation, ensuring that the spirit and teachings of Bishop Daniels remain a foundational part of Morris Cathedral's journey. Under Dr. Blevins' stewardship, the church builds on this remarkable legacy, nurturing a vibrant and resilient faith community dedicated to God's work.
